Asian Style Whip Fishing

Lately I’ve been getting interested in Asian style pole
fishing. It all started with a post on a carp fishing discussion board about the Asian carp threat to the great lakes. Eventually the conversation turned to possible fishing opportunities for these fish. Some claimed they would be uncatchable due to being filter feeders. Others argued that they were catch-able and a link to you-tube showed a Japanese angler catching silver carp using a long thin float and some kind of paste bait.
Being an amateur float maker I was very interested in this new type of float. Over the winter I obtained some supplies,
including some carbon fibre for the antennas and tried my best to reproduce some of these floats. They turned out not-bad, but I wasn’t quite able to get them as slim as the real deal. I need a lathe.
A few months later there was another post on the same board. this post highlighted the pole fishing equipment and
techniques used by some Korean anglers in Canada. After reading this I really caught the bug to try some of this type of fishing. A link was posted to an American supplier of this tackle, so after a few days wait I received a package in the mail with a 22′ telescopic whip and a couple of floats.
Unfortunately, I won’t get a chance to try them out ’till next weekend. I have to say, seeing the delicacy of the whip
(less than a millimetre in diameter at the tip), I’m a little leery of getting smashed up by a big carp. I’m going to have to try to think up a bullhead selective bait.
